George William Mitchell, Sr. died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce Harris Mitchell, his brothers, Charles and Thomas Mitchell, and his parents, Paul and Violet King Mitchell. He is survived by his three children and their families: Terese Mitchell and Jeff Burr, Tammy and Steve Herndon, and Bill and Christie Mitchell. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren: Caroline Mitchell Frost, Heith Frost, Georgeanne Mitchell, Will Mitchell, Chase Herndon, Mitchell Herndon, Ellis Herndon, Mary Margaret Herndon, Jack Wilson, and Violet Wilson.
George was a lifelong pillar in the Dalton community. He attended Dalton High School and the University of Georgia, where he played football for both. He proudly served in the Army and owned and operated Dalton Paving and Construction for over 45 years. George was a member of First Baptist Church of Dalton.
George contributed to the community in several ways throughout his life. He served on the boards of Hardwick Bank and Trust, Dalton Utilities, and Hamilton Medical Center and he was an avid outdoorsman. He loved few things more than spending time in the mountains, taking his mules on vacation, and hunting birds.
The family would especially like to thank their wonderful caretakers Marilyn, Raven, Lisa, and Shelley for their tireless love and care for their father.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 12, 2021, from 2 until 4 p.m. at Love Funeral Home with a private memorial to follow at a later date.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in George’s name to the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation-Hamilton Cardiovascular Institute or the Back Country Horsemen of North Georgia.
