Harold Dawson Hilliard

Harold D. Hilliard, 91, of Dalton, died Friday, September 9, 2022, at Dalton Place Senior Living. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Melba Jean Hilliard and his son Lloyd Bruce Hilliard; mother, Reva Mae Witherow, stepfather Rob Witherow, and brother and sister-in-law Rex and Ozella Witherow.

Harold is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Brian Scott Hilliard and Joan Hilliard; daughter-in-law Joanne Hilliard, grandchildren Jennifer and Donny York, Angela and Murphy Scott, and great-grandchildren Preston and Savannah York. He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Nell Lynn and James Lyles and Brenda and Jerry Raper; and his special friend and companion Nan Helmericks. Nieces and nephews also survive.

A proud twenty-two-year veteran of the United States Air Force, Harold served his country honorably and with distinction in a variety of assignments both in-country and overseas, most notably as a radio technician on B-47 bombers and as a tracking and programming specialist in the Air Force’s anti-ballistic missile defense system, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant. After retirement, he established a two-way radio and mobile telephone company, Tri-County Communications, where he earned the nickname “The Radio Guy.”

The family would like to thank all of the caring and committed staff of Dalton Place Senior Living, Amedisys Home Health, and Amedisys Hospice Care for their kindness and dedication to Harold during his final days.

The family will receive visitors at Love Funeral Home on Sunday, September 11, 2022, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Services will be Monday, September 12, 2022, at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Love Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the North Georgia Alzheimer Association or the USO.
