Hazel Poteet Metcalf, born June 23, 1934, in Dalton, claimed her promise of eternal life on May 11, 2023, at her home in Dalton, GA surrounded by her family and caregivers.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, Lige and Nellie McGaha Poteet of Dalton; her brother, Ernest Poteet of Dalton; and her high school sweetheart and husband of 40 years, Kenneth Lake Metcalf of Dalton. She is survived by her two children, Michael W. Metcalf (Susan) of Fort Payne, AL, and Michelle L. Metcalf of Cartersville, GA; grandchildren, Owsley Cheek III (Emily) of Madison, AL, Lindsay Cheek (Joel) of Lake Tahoe, CA, Matthew Cheek of Gardnerville, NV; and great-grandchildren, Owsley Cheek IV, Bayley Cheek, Sage O’Connor and Maddie Cheek, along with many nieces and nephews.
Hazel attended Valley Point High School where she played varsity basketball. She was a four-year letterman, the team captain, and high scorer for Whitfield County during her senior season before graduating in 1953. After graduation, Hazel attended Herrines School of Business and afterward worked for Barwick Mills as an executive assistant. She and Kenneth married in 1956 prior to moving to Pensacola, FL and then to Oxnard, CA where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion before being deployed to the Philippines and Guam. After taking time off to raise her children, Hazel worked as a sales administrator for Patcraft, Queen Carpets, and Shaw Industries for over 30 years until her retirement in 2009. Hazel taught Sunday School and managed the Dug Gap Cemetery Fund for several years as well.
Hazel was a devoted wife and mother who placed her family and her love of Jesus Christ above all else. She loved the beauty of nature and marveled over the rising and setting sun. An accomplished artist, she captured this beauty in many of her oil paintings, drawings, and writings. She was the rock of our family and, despite her health issues, maintained her sense of humor and warm smile until the end of her life on earth. She was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service for Hazel will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Dug Gap Baptist Church. Pastor Dr. Duane Mills will officiate. The family will receive friends at Dug Gap Baptist from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m.
