Ida Mae King

d. February 7, 2023

Ida Mae King, 83, of the Dawnville Community, passed away peacefully at Hamilton Medical Center on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Clay King; father and mother, Robert and Ruth Gilbert; and brother, Raymond Gilbert. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (King) Baumgardner of Dalton; grandson, Michael Patrick Howell (Rachel Thomas) of Chattanooga; sister, Roberta Shosh of Detroit, Michigan; brothers, Charles (Chuck) Gilbert and William (Bill) Gilbert, both of Detroit; and her kitty, Cocoa (“Momma’s Girl”). Several wonderful nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. King worked hard all her life starting at the age of 14. She spent a great deal of time working in retail, but later moved to work side-by-side with her husband at their small, but successful, machine shop until she retired at the age of 65. She and her husband moved to Dalton in 1967, and together they worked to clear the land where their home would be built in 1969 in the Dawnville Community.

Mrs. King battled several illnesses over the past nine years, overcoming most until her cancer returned. Her daughter said that she was like a Timex watch: “Takes a lick’n and then keeps on tick’n.”

At Mrs. King’s request there will be no funeral services. She has requested to be cremated and her ashes to be buried beside her husband in the Dawnville Cemetery. The family will schedule a small gathering for a “celebration of life” at a later time. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society (3380 Chastain Meadows Parkway, Suite 200, Kennesaw, GA 30144) or the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia (P. O. Box 3946, Dalton, GA 30719).
