J. Sherwood Jones, Jr, MD, died January 3, 2019 after a prolonged illness. He was born on October 29, 1934 and reared in Hogansville, GA, the son of the late Sherwood Jones and Clifford Wilkinson Jones. He was preceded in death by his brother in law, Charles Parham of Dalton.
He attended Emory University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Jones graduated from Emory School of Medicine in 1958. He completed three years of residency in Internal Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and a year of cardiology fellowship at Emory University Hospital. His post graduate training was interrupted by two years active duty in the USAF (medical corp), served at Myrtle Beach AFB, SC. While in Myrtle Beach, he met the love of his life, Jean Stubbs. They met at church, spent much of their time together on the beaches collecting sharks’ teeth and shells and were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1961.
After completing training in 1964, he and Jean and two very young sons, Sherwood III and Carlton, came to Dalton to join Dr. Jim Redfern in an internal medicine practice. Their daughter, Ashley, was born in Dalton in 1966. He and Jean joined First Baptist Church on their first Sunday here and have been active members since. Dr. Jones was very involved in activities at Hamilton Medical Center. Among other roles, he served twice as president of the medical staff and as chairman of the medical center board.
After retirement in 2001, Dr. Jones was active in the community, serving as a volunteer at the Health Department, DOCUP, Dalton Senior Housing, the Dalton Whitfield affiliate of the Community Foundation of NW Georgia, and as chairman of the board of RossWoods Adult Day Services. His legacy is one of integrity, service, and kindness.
Survivors include Jean, Sherwood III (Danielle) and their children, Emma, Garrett, Mincey, and Emani, of Dalton; Ashley Tiede and her daughter, Caitlin, of Dalton; Carlton (Della) and their daughters, Caroline and Lily, of Atlanta; sister, Emily Earle Parham, of Dalton; nephew, Robert Sherwood Parham, (Lindsey) of Austin, Texas; niece, Laura Parham Herrick, (John) of Cleveland, Ohio; and cousin, John Neal Wilkinson, of Atlanta.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 pm on Sunday at First Baptist Church of Dalton with Rev. Jonathan Barlow and Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church following the service.
Instead of flowers the family asks that memorial gifts be made to DOCUP, RossWoods Adult Day Services, First Baptist Church, or Community Foundation of NW Georgia.
