Mr. Jesse W. “Chub” Gravley, Jr., 78, of Dalton passed away on May 10, 2018 at Memorial Hospital after months of medical complications.
Chub (a/k/a J.W. and, to his grandchildren, Papa Chub) was born on July 10, 1939 in Whitfield County to the late Jesse W. Gravley, Sr. and Pearl Ray Gravley. He was a 1957 graduate of Valley Point High School and, following graduation, attended West Georgia College in Carrollton.
As Chub’s family and friends know, he never met a stranger. For more than 50 years, he was a fixture of East Emery Street as owner of Dalton Radiator Service. When not repairing radiators, he could often be seen through the shop window sitting in his favorite chair, possibly taking an afternoon nap.
Chub was an avid fisherman and hunter, spending many early morning hours and weekends with friends and fellow hunters of the Valley Point and Tilton Hunting Clubs. He also enjoyed playing and coaching baseball and softball. From T-League to Majors, Chub coached numerous youth baseball and softball teams as well as the Shaw Ladies Industrial softball team, leading many of his teams to state, regional, and national titles. In recognition of his achievements, Chub was inducted into the Dalton Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame in 2007.
Community service was important to Chub. He was a member of the Valley Point Ruritan Club, where he held various offices, and served as President of the Southeast Whitfield High School Band Booster Club. For almost 60 years, Chub was a member of Five Springs United Methodist Church and, when able, attended Fellowship Bible Church.
Chub leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Julia Hall Gravley of Dalton; son, Jonathan Scott (Laurie) Gravley of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Ginger Michelle (Jim) Stegmayer of Lake Mary, FL; grandchildren, Courtney Volker (Steven), Kristin Gravley, Tyler Gravley (Shelby), Ariana Morgan and Alexander Morgan; great-grandchildren, Kinsey Volker and Conner Volker; sisters, Betty Dyer and Kathryn Bigham; brother, Wilbur Gravley; nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Fellowship Bible Church.
Visitation will be held at Love Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fellowship Bible Church Youth Programs, 2044 Dug Gap Road, Dalton Ga. 30720, or to Valley Point Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund, 725 Carbondale Road S.W., Dalton Ga. 30721.
