James “Joe” Johnson, 79, of Dalton, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Hamilton Medical Center. He attended Dalton Public Schools, served in the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 112 of Dalton. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, having driven for the Children’s Bus ministry, co-taught the Cecil Johnson Men’s Sunday School class and served as a deacon. He worked for Shaw Industries over 40 years and retired as Director of Media Productions.
He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing his guitar and cherished spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Papa Joe.”
He was preceded in death by his parents James J. Johnson, Sr. and Lucille Bearden Wells. He is survived by his wife Peggy Hurst Johnson, son Joe Johnson of Crandall, daughters and son-in-law Sherry and Steve Gadra of Powder Springs and Kris Hiland of Rocky Face; grandchildren Kayla Johnson of Dalton, Daniel and Rachel Gadra and fiancee, Jessie Rankin, of Atlanta, Ethan and Chandler Hiland of Chattanooga.
The family will receive friends in the parlor of First Baptist Church Saturday, June 4 from 3:00pm-4:00pm, the Service will follow at 4:00pm.
