Mr. James Lee Maeger, 87, of Cohutta passed away Monday, October 15, 2018 at his residence.
James was born December 1, 1930 in Whitfield County to the late Claud Howell and Mattie Lee Hill Maeger and was preceded in death by his step-mother, Gussie Patterson Maeger; brother-in-law, Trammell Eugene Burch and sister-in-law, Betty Knight Maeger.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he was a Staff Sergeant and served in the Korean Conflict. James was a business machine salesman for Lee Office Supply until his retirement. After retirement he spent many happy hours working hard on the farm where he really liked cutting and baling hay. His hobby was working on anything and he loved to build furniture. He was a graduate of Dalton High School and a member of Grove Level Baptist Church for 52 years. He became an ordained deacon in the 1970’s and he believed a deacon was one who serves and did all he could to help, especially those on his ministry list. His favorite place of service was as an usher because he loved to open the door and greet those coming into the church. Later in life he was a member of the Furniture Ministry for Single Moms. A small group of very senior men picked up and delivered furniture to single moms in need and the furniture was usually moved in his cattle trailer. Before his illness he was a member of the Cohutta Ruritan Club, Cohutta Zoning Board and served as a polling official for elections. The last few years he enjoyed the Cohutta Senior Group, where he really looked forward to the Tuesday lunch meetings. But most of all he loved his family.
James is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janice Burch Maeger; children, Johnny and Linda Woody and Jeff and Susan Wilkinson; brother, Jack Howell Maeger; sister-in-law, Jeanette Morgan Burch; nieces and nephews.
