Jewel King

Mrs. Jewel King of Dalton, age 94, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 26, at Tranquility of Dalton. She was born June 12, 1926 in Dalton, Georgia to Robert Oscar Ponder and Rosa May Staten Ponder.

Jewel was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Dalton High School and The Herren School of Business. She was employed by the City of Dalton Police Department where she worked for 23 years. Jewel retired to spend time and travel with her husband Arnold and be a homemaker. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and spending quality time with her mother. Jewel was the loving mother of one son, William Clea Hitt and one grandson, Ryan Clea Hitt.

Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband William Arthur Hitt, brother Robert O. Ponder and wife Hilda, sister Dorothy Holcomb and husband Johnny, sister Barbara Mansfield and husband Don, sister-in-law Frances Ponder. Jewel was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years Arnold S. King.

Jewel is survived by her brother, Henry Fred Ponder of Huntsville, AL; son, Clea and Denise Hitt of Dalton; grandson, Ryan and Lauren Hitt of Chattanooga; stepchildren, Kenneth and Elizabeth King of Dalton, Darrell and Susan King of Dalton, Suzanne and Mike Johnston of Charleston, SC; step-grandsons, Blake and Laurie King, Ryan and Summer King, Joseph and Carrie King, David and Brittany Johnston, Jeffrey and Emma King, Jake King and Brett Johnston; step-granddaughters, Lauren and Trey Miller and Molly and Joe Young; step-great-grandchildren, Ellie, Maddie, Mikenley, Miklayne, Mary Lee and Oslin King and Shaw Young; special niece and nephew, Audrey and Donald Pilcher; a host of nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Brenda Smith, Freida Boring and Rebecca Schuman.

A private service was held for family. Jewel was laid to rest at West Hill Cemetery.
