Joanne Smith

September 7, 1932 — February 21, 2020

Joanne Smith, 87 years young, passed away February 21, 2020.

Joanne was born in Huntsville Alabama in 1932 to Jessie Daniel Smith and Lillie Mae Esslinger Smith, and was blessed to be the youngest of the ten children from their love.  She was loved by many, disliked by none, gracious and caring, and instinctively a good mother to Patricia, Daniel, and Joi.

Joanne faced many adversities in life and fought them all with a tenacity few people possess. She grew up with brothers and sisters she dearly loved and was adored by, as her parents passed early in her life. Her siblings were her anchors and inspiration.  Her father had hoped for another son; that’s how and why she was born with the name Jo Anne Smith.

Joanne loved flower gardens, kitty cats, dancing, all music, cooking, friends, family reunions, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Katherine Smith, Robert Smith, Raymond Smith, Howard Smith, Marie Smith Reed, Marvin Oliver Smith, Martha Rose Smith Glasscock (of Dalton Ga.), Jeanette Smith Gill, and Jessie Daniel Smith (of Dalton Ga.). Husband Curt Sessoms, daughter Patricia Sessoms Pitt, Grandson Garrett Sessoms, Granddaughter Melissa Sessoms, Grandson Christopher Pitts, Grandson Robert Nelson, and her most beloved Husband and her Heart and Soul Don Madison of Denver, CO.

Joanne is survived by son Curtis Daniel Sessoms, daughter Joi Denise Sessoms Nelson, Grand Children Wesley Nelson, Christopher Nelson, Mary Joanne Nelson, Jessica Pitts Dickerson, and Bonita Pitts. As well as numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Joanne will be missed more than she could ever imagine.  She left a smile on the face of everyone she ever met.  To Greg Glasscock, Stanton Smith, Howard Smith, Suzan Gill Murray, and Chris Gill Adams, she will forever be our “Aunt Jo”.  And to Neal Adams, he will always be her “Favorite Boyfriend”.

Visitation will be Thursday March 5 th at 2:00pm at Love Funeral Home in Dalton, Ga. Her interment will follow at 3:00pm at Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
