John Sherard Quarles

John Sherard Quarles, 90, of Dalton, GA, passed away at home on Sunday December 15, 2019. He was born on March 3, 1929 in Abbeville, S.C. to Dr. William Yeldell and Mabel Reid Quarles. He was one of seven children.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Cobb Quarles, his son, Cobb Quarles of Atlanta and his daughter, Shane Quarles Estock, and his son-in-law, Joe Estock of Ponte Vedra, FL; his brother, William Quarles (Pat) of Greenville, S.C.; sister, Rachel Quarles McCalla of Greenville, S.C.; and, brother, Dr. James Quarles of Augusta, GA., and many, many nieces and nephews.

He attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and upon graduation, with a degree in civil engineering, went to South America working for the United States Geodetic Survey. Two years later he married Patricia Cobb Quarles of Greenville, S.C. and he began a career with J. E. Sirrine, an engineering company there. In 1966, they moved to Dalton, GA. and John took a position with Star Finishing Company, later to become Shaw Industries, from which he retired in 1995.

John’s service to his church—the First Baptist Church of Dalton—was a reflection of the love that he had for his Lord Jesus Christ. To his Church and to the Kingdom’s work, John also gave himself sacrificially through his service as a deacon and by his involvement in and leadership of many committees at the Church. He was a valued member of the Derrell Roberts/Charles Acree Sunday School Class. He also served in other capacities at any time that he was called upon by the Church.

He will be remembered for his steady nature, his easy-going and friendly manner, and his athleticism; there was never a wave too large or a diving board too high. He was fair-minded and moral, and he was pleasant and kind to all, even throughout his illness. John was a loving husband, father, and friend, and his absence will be sorely felt by all those who knew and loved him.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate John’s life on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Jonathan Barlow and Reverend Phillip Cannon officiating the funeral service. Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens in Dalton. The family will receive friends in the Atrium of the Church from 12:00 noon until the time of the funeral.
