Kathryn "Katie" Mcghee

August 21, 1923 — December 5, 2019

Kathryn (Katie) Bernice Holmes McGhee passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

She grew up in St. Louis Park, MN and graduated from high school at Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, MN in 1941.  She then attended LaSierra University and graduated from nursing school at Loma Linda University in 1946.

Married Earl Taylor McGhee in December 21, 1949. They moved to Dalton in 1952 where Dr. McGhee was one of 8 physicians in the community. She assisted in getting his practice started and he practiced medicine there for 35 years.  During this time they also started Wooddale and Ridgewood Nursing Homes.

She was president of the Whitfield Murray Women’s Medical Auxiliary, Lenna Judd Women’s Club, on the Board of Directors at Friendship House, Chairman of Cherokee Estate, Chairman of the Rural Health Committee for the Georgia Medical Auxiliary and during her latter duties made free polio immunizations available throughout the area.  She was active in instigating fund raising for the Mary Bell Wood nursing scholarship fund that provided many scholarships for nursing students through the years.

Member of the Seventh-day Adventist church where she was very active in many areas including starting the Indian River fruit program, the Community Services Center, Chairman of the School Board at the Learning Tree Elementary School as well as many other areas.

She is survived by her four daughters Cheryl (Ken) Rogers, Calhoun, GA; Patty (Bill) Coffman, Redlands, CA; Kathy (John) Schleier, Dalton, GA; and Judy (Steve) Fehlenberg, Calhoun, GA; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
