Lorraine Marie Schuster Roberts, beloved mother, aged 93, of Rocky Face, GA, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024, at Southern Haven memory care home, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on September 4, 1930, in Pennsylvania, she was the cherished daughter of Oscar Schuster and Anna Marie Aul Schuster, and the youngest sibling to Rudy and Herb.
Lorraine's life was a beautiful tapestry of commitment, dedication, and love. She shared 57 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Stuart Roberts, until his passing in March 2020. Stuart Roberts was a native of Bermuda and an avid sailor, whose career with Pan Am opened the skies for their adventures. Their shared passion for discovery took them from the turquoise waters of Bermuda and Tahiti to the diverse landscapes of Australia, the bustling streets of Hong Kong, and the historic ruins of Rome, among many other destinations. They loved sailing, navigating from the breezy coasts of the Long Island Sound to the rocky shores of Maine, and later, the serene waters of the Florida Keys. Their love for exploration was equally matched by their enjoyment of road trips, venturing out West to immerse themselves in the expansive beauty of the American landscape.
In the early 1980s, Lorraine and Stuart set their sights on Rocky Face, GA, a place where they could connect with the rugged simplicity of rural life, much like the farming roots from Lorraine's childhood.
Lorraine's legacy of love and care is carried on by her family: her twins, Jane Roberts, and John Roberts; John’s wife, Brenda; stepdaughter, Nita Lee Roberts; and her adored grandson, Brendan, as well as many friends and caregivers. Her life was marked by a profound dedication to nursing, having studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and serving as a registered nurse in New York and Miami.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Lorraine found joy in bird watching, gardening, and culinary arts, sharing her love for cooking and baking with those around her. In her love for the natural world, Lorraine was especially interested in and always mindful of the delicate balance between native species and the encroaching threats posed by invasive plants. Her commitment to preserving our local ecosystem mirrored the dedication she had to understanding and respecting the cultures of Indigenous Americans. Her spirit of community and faith led her to be an active member of her church and various local organizations, including years of volunteer service at Doc-Up (Dalton Organization of Churches United for People) and the Mountain Top Boys Home, among many others, where her generosity and kindness left an indelible mark.
A celebration of Lorraine's life, along with a tribute to her late husband Stuart Roberts, whose life was not publicly celebrated due to the Covid pandemic and out of consideration for Lorraine's condition with Alzheimer's, will be held at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church on Sunday, February 18, at 2 pm, followed by lunch. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1 until 2. The family welcomes flowers to be sent to the church in memory of both Lorraine and Stuart.
They were dearly loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew them. Their legacies of kindness, adventure, and compassion will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts of their family, friends, and the many lives they touched.
Note: Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church is located at 597 Lafayette Rd. Rocky Face, GA 30740.
