Mrs. Margaret Lucille Taliaferro Kinnamon, 97, of Varnell passed away Friday, October 5, 2018.
She was the daughter of the late John and Alma Routh Taliaferro and was preceded in death by her husband, William M. “Billy” Kinnamon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and E.D. Dycus, Dorothy and Boyd Alexander and Jean and Albert Breeden; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Ben Manis and Martha Nell and George McCarty.
Margaret was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, secretary, counselor, confidante, and friend to all who came in contact with her. She was a devout Christian and member of First United Methodist Church of Dalton. She had tremendous compassion for others and served as a friend and counselor for family, friends, students, and coworkers. She always had a kind and encouraging word for others and never complained.
Margaret was born in Chattanooga, TN. She moved with her family to Lake Worth, FL when her father received a job opportunity there. Her mother passed away tragically not long before child birth when Margaret was just five years old. The family then returned to Dalton. Margaret attended school in Chattanooga, TN and enjoyed learning to sing, dance, and tap dance. She performed at both Memorial Auditorium and The Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga with her older sister Virginia. She later graduated from Varnell High School in 1939. She married Billy Kinnamon in 1940 and they resided in Varnell, as Billy worked for Southern Railway. Billy obtained the charter for the City of Varnell. He became the first mayor of Varnell and served from 1968 to 1978. Margaret served as the City Clerk in Varnell for 38 years, accepting no salary. She LOVED the city of Varnell. Margaret worked in the Varnell Elementary lunchroom, later North Whitfield High School in the vocational department. Still later she worked in the Northwest High School vocational department until her retirement. In her early years she and her sister Virginia worked for their uncle Lee Routh at his department store in Dalton. Margaret and her mother-in-law Callie Kinnamon sewed bed spreads at their home many, many nights until midnight to help support the family.
Margaret is survived by her children and their spouses, Carolyn and Frank Land of Varnell, Tom and Brenda Kinnamon of Chatsworth and Jim and Gena Kinnamon of Dalton; grandchildren, Mitch (Dana) Land, Matt (Amy) Land, Michelle Kinnamon, Khale (Courtney) Kinnamon, Scott (Heather) Kinnamon, Kris (Pam) Kinnamon, Kevin (Kely) Kinnamon and Klif (Melissa) Kinnamon; great-grandchildren, Lathe, Laken, Ledge, Lanier, Bowen, McCord, Banks and Cross Land, Collin, Clara, Karcy, Kirby, Cooper, Carver, Keaton, Katherine, Mitchell, Harrison, Ian, Grace, Jack, Kohl, Kaleigh, Kace, Faith, Kadance and Phoenix Kinnamon; many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Regency of Dalton for their love and care as well as all the visitors from the First United Methodist Church of Dalton and the community. Margaret cherished her visits, prayer time and communion with the saints that special friends and fellow believers provided during her stay at Regency. May they all be rewarded for their diligence and service as well as she has been.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dalton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Tommy Willingham officiating.
Pallbearers will be Lathe Land, Scott Kinnamon, Khale Kinnamon, Kris Kinnamon, Kevin Kinnamon, Klif Kinnamon and Honorary pallbearers will be Ledge Land, Cross Land, Mitchell Kinnamon, Ian Kinnamon, Kace Kinnamon, Kohl Kinnamon, Harrison Kinnamon, Collin Kinnamon, Cooper Kinnamon, Carver Kinnamon and Keaton Kinnamon.
Burial will follow in Varnell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday in the Atrium of the First United Methodist Church from Noon until 2 p.m.
