Mike Smith

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Michael “Mike” Smith, a loving father, doting grandfather, dedicated brother, and the ultimate Georgia Bulldawgs enthusiast. He left this world on Monday, July 17th, 2023, leaving behind a tremendous void in our hearts, but an indelible legacy of love, devotion, and cherished memories.

Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Rollins Smith, his father, Harold Smith, and brothers, Jerry Smith and Jimmy Smith.  He is survived by his son, Rhett, daughter-in-law Abbi, grandchildren, Porter and Ruthie; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Bobby Wilson; sister-in-law, Melva Smith Andrews.  Nieces and nephews also survive.

Born on September 30th, 1954, Mike grew up in Varnell, Georgia with his brothers and sister and went on to graduate from the University of Georgia in 1976.  Upon graduation, Mike went to work in juvenile justice with the State of Georgia, retiring after 30 years of service.  In retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and reminding others he did not have to work anymore.

Out of all the roles Mike assumed in his life, his favorite was being a dad and grandfather.  Mike embraced his role as father and "Paw” with unwavering dedication and unconditional love. His greatest joys in life were his son, daughter-in-law, and precious grandchildren. He treasured their happiness and worked hard to provide them with a life filled with love, laughter, and opportunities. Whether it was attending school events, baseball games, or dance recitals, Mike was always present and his love for his family knew no bounds.

A lifelong and devoted fan of the Georgia Bulldawgs, Mike was a testament to unwavering loyalty. From the highs of victory to the lows of defeat, he stood by his team, clad in red and black, cheering them on with unbridled passion. He embraced the camaraderie of fellow fans, celebrating their triumphs and sharing in their sorrows. Attending (and winning) the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game with his son and grandson was a highlight of his life.

A service to celebrate the life of Mike will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Love Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at West Hill Cemetery. The following will serve as pallbearers: Chad Crowe, Chuck Payne, Clay Powell, Eric Smith, Jeremy Smith, and Bobby Wilson

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Love Funeral Home. In honor of Mike’s passion for his Back-to-Back National Champion Georgia Bulldawgs, we ask everyone to wear red and black in Mike’s memory.
