Newell Akins

Ollie Newell Akins, 87, of Dalton, passed away at Pleasant Valley Personal Care Home on Monday, July 31, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Vinnie Akins, and sisters, Margaret Cargel and JoAnn Langston. Mr. Akins is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Virginia Akins; children, Rebecca Akins and Tim Akins (Debra); and granddaughter, Rachel Akins. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Akins served our community as a Window Clerk for the Dalton Main Post Office, retiring after 35 years of service. He then served as a Bailiff for the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office at the Whitfield County Courthouse for more than 20 years. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff and caregivers at both Pleasant Valley Personal Care Home and Amedisys Hospice for their compassion and care for Mr. Akins.

A graveside service for Mr. Akins will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at West Hill Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Darey Kittle and Reverend Jim Brinkley leading the service. Flowers are accepted or the family asks that donations be made to Salem Baptist Church (1448 Pleasant Grove Drive NE, Dalton, GA 30721).
