Robert Clinton Campbell Sr. - age 83 - of Dalton, Georgia passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Hamilton Medical Center from complications due to Covid-19. He was born to the late James W. Campbell and Nellie Cooper Campbell. He was fiercely proud of his service in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic in the Vietnam War, and he retired from the Air Force after twenty years of service. He was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Ione Campbell Lindsey and Annette Campbell Rogers, brother James W. Campbell Jr., daughter-in-law Tina Campbell as well as countless spoiled rotten dogs.
Robert is survived by his wife of 51 years Sybil Dunn Campbell; sons Robert Campbell Jr. (Elaine), Scott Campbell (Tina), Russell Campbell (Kim); grandchildren Bethany Norris (Matt), Nicole Campbell (John Michael Risko), Andrew Campbell (Kristen), Jamey Campbell (Nichole), and Shelby Campbell; great-grandchildren Allie Norris, Lindsay Norris, Audrey Norris, Garrett Norris, Tovi Campbell-Risko, Carson Campbell, Ezra Campbell-Risko, and Jackson Campbell; various family and friends, as well as step-daughters Debbie Guzzetta (Vince) and Candie Hankins (Bob) from a previous marriage.
Robert was proud of his childhood in the Crown Mill village where his family worked hard to provide a life for themselves. After high school, he quickly decided that Crown was not the path for him, and promptly enlisted in the Air Force. Any time his reenlistment came up, he thought back on his time in the mill and emphatically signed back up. He spent two decades stationed in England, Morocco, Texas, Alabama, two tours in the Vietnam War, Florida, Georgia, England (again), and Florida (again) before he retired as a Master Sergeant. He spent the next chapter in his life managing a regional team for Tiara Exclusives, traveling with his wife to Hawaii, eating steaks in casinos, telling inappropriate jokes to beautiful women, religiously watching Rachel Maddow, and teaching important life lessons to his grandchildren, such as accepting the genetic tendency to drop food on your shirt, that sweatpants and t-shirts are perfectly acceptable daywear options, and that Campbells do not marry Republicans. He was a voracious reader and loved Coca-Cola, The Platters, and country music (Dolly Parton, for two very big reasons). In the interest of common decency, the family has chosen to censor his more risqué stories at this time.
Robert Campbell was not a man who put on airs or tried to impress anyone, but he loved to make people laugh and entertain them with exploits from his youth, such as the time he dated a Playboy model in the 60s when he was stationed in Florida, the free drinks he got from Jack Ruby at one of his clubs in Texas, or the bar fight he had with members of the Dallas Cowboy football team. He lived a life full of experiences and surrounded by people who could not help but enjoy his company. At the end of the day, he was tremendously loyal to his family, his fellow veterans, and the country that he loved.
In lieu of flowers, you can honor his memory by donating to the Air Force Aid Society or the Democratic Party of Georgia and voting for Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the U.S. Senate runoffs. Nothing would make him happier than putting two Georgia Democrats in the Senate and knowing he had a part in annoying his Republican friends. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery on 17 December 2020. The recorded virtual service will be available for viewing and messages can be left for the family at www.lovefuneralhomega.com . LOVE FUNERAL HOME, 706-278-3313.
