Roy Franklin Unger, Sr.

October 23, 1925 — March 24, 2021

Roy Franklin Unger, Sr., 95, recently of Dalton, GA, (formerly of Front Royal, VA, and Havre de Grace, MD), passed away suddenly Tuesday morning at Hamilton Medical Center, Dalton, GA.

Mr. Unger was born October 23, 1925 in Wachula, Florida. He was the son of John Clevenger Unger and Stella Virginia Kremer Unger. He was a graduate of Handley High School, Winchester, VA, Shepard College, Martinsburg, WVA, the University of Virginia, and attended other colleges, as well. He was a retired high school mathematics teacher, having taught in Warren County High School, (Fort Royal, VA), Frederick Sasser High School, (Upper Marlboro, MD), and Aberdeen High School, (Aberdeen, MD). After retiring from teaching after 35 years, he worked as a Research Analyst for AMSAA at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

Mr. Unger was a WWII army veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was in training to be a bombardier when the war ended. He later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as an Educator and Training Officer, attaining to rank of Captain.

Mr. Unger enjoyed many creative hobbies during his life to include: woodworking, caning chairs, repairing and refinishing furniture, upholstering furniture, repairing clocks, collecting and selling coins, chip carving, and even various types of needlework. He continued to enjoy building birdhouses and other wooden crafts until his 95 birthday. Mr. Unger, also, served as a Cub Scout Den Master for his son’s troop.

Mr. Unger was greatly admired for his love and faithfulness to his wife of 55 years and to his family. He was a hard working, responsible, generous, and loving father to his children. His personal integrity, high standards of behavior, speech, and craftsmanship were well known to many.

Mr. Unger was a member of several churches throughout his lifetime: Buckton Presbyterian Church, Front Royal, VA; First Christian Church, Havre de Grace, MD; and Perryville Baptist Church, Perryville, MD.

Mr. Unger was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Alma Louise Bryant Unger, whom he married at 18; both of his parents; 4 sisters: Josephine Bolen, Alice Unger, Lucy Mason, Colleen Horner; 2 brothers: John Ray Unger, and Yauncy Horner.

Mr. Unger is survived by his 2 daughters, Dianne Dashler (John) of Dalton, GA, Linda Borneman (Tom), Havre de Grace, MD.,and by his son, Roy F. Unger, Jr. (Nikki), Front Royal, VA.

He is, also, survived by 2 granddaughters, Allison Dashler Llanos (Dom) and Jessica Unger Hohman (Scot); 4 grandsons: John Wesley Dasher (Amanda), Christopher Borneman, Joshua Unger, Zachary Unger; 6 great-grandsons: Alex Dashler, Warren Dashler, Matt Llanos, Koal Hohman, Wyatt Hohman, Tate Hohman; 2 great-granddaughters: Megan Llanos and Jordis Hohman. He is, also, survived by 9 nephews: James Bolen, Jr., John Ray Unger, Jr., Daniel Unger, Barry Bryant, Randolph Bryant, Terry Bryant, Larry Bryant, Timothy Bryant, David Bryant; 5 nieces: Bonnie Unger, Patty Unger, Barbara McWhinney, Joyce Fleming, and Mary Ellen Creel.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Fellowship Bible Church, 2044 Dug Gap Rd., Dalton, GA. Visitation with the family will be at 2:00PM followed by the Service at 3:00PM.
