Mr. Stanley Eric Carlson, Sr. of Dalton, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, September 10th at the age of 90.
Stan was born March 5th, 1934, in Winona, Minnesota and grew up in Elberton, Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Mohler Carlson, and his three sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Mechelle Carlson, Tony and Mary Carlson, and Andy and Molly Carlson, all from Dalton, Georgia. Additional survivors include six grandchildren: Cody Carlson, Caleb Carlson, Rachel Carlson, Sam Carlson, Niklas Carlson, and William Carlson; and three great-grandchildren: Brayden Carlson, Ella Kate Carlson, and Layla Carlson. Stan is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and June Carlson of Gainesville, Florida, and sister and brother-in-law, Karin and Bill Knight of Sugar Hill, Georgia.
Stan attended Georgia Military College, followed by Georgia Tech where he studied Textile Management, and earned a BS in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He served in the Georgia National Guard followed by the U.S. Air Force.
Stan’s career in textile sales and management spanned 38 years working for the Bibb Company, Shuford Mills, and the Jones Company.
Stan dedicated much of his life to service as an active member of the Optimist Club, Big Brother/Big Sister program, Mountaintop Boys Home, and the Boy Scouts of America. During his tenure with the BSA, Stan was awarded the Silver Beaver Award; a “distinguished service award” given to those who “made an impact on the lives of youth through service”.
Stan was a member in the choir at the Dalton First United Methodist Church. Additionally, he and his wife Sylvia were active members of the Sounds of Joy adult choir, they were long time members of the Dalton Carpet Squares (a Western Square Dance Group), and they loved traveling the country visiting many national parks.
Stan loved the outdoors, spending a lot of time camping and hiking and is affectionately known by many as “Mountain Man”.
The Carlson family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the caregivers that lovingly gave of themselves to care and tend to the needs of Stan over the past 4 years. They were truly angels providing service that compassionately went above and beyond what was expected.
Services for Stan will be held at Love Funeral Home in Dalton, Georgia. Visitation begins at 3:00 pm followed by a short service at 4:30 pm on Sunday, 9/15/2024.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to Troop 60 (BSA) at Dalton First United Methodist Church, The United Way of Dalton Big Brother/Big Sister program, or the Mountain Top Boys Home in Sugar Valley, GA.
