Stefan H. Fromm MD died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on March 22, 2023. He was born in Vienna, Austria, December 24, 1936. He emigrated with his family to Puerto Rico in 1939, after the annexation of Austria by Germany preceding WWII. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, completed his internship at San Francisco General Hospital, and completed his surgical training at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He served in Germany as a Medical Officer in the U.S. Army.
Stefan married his wife of nearly 63 years, Shirley, on June 25, 1960. He began his surgical career in Puerto Rico and practiced there for 10 years before moving the family to Dalton, Georgia in 1978. There he joined the late Drs. Paul Bradley and Don Giddens at Dalton Surgical Group and continued his career in surgery for more than 30 years.
Stefan loved God, family, and his community, and he worked tirelessly for all three. He loved to travel and see the world but was always happy to return home. In Dalton he built his life. He was a committed Christian who lived out his faith. He was an active member of First Baptist Dalton and sang with the Sanctuary Choir for more than 35 years. He helped bring quality healthcare to Dalton and made it accessible to all by providing free surgical care through the Whitfield County Health Department. He supported local schools and sports and was instrumental in bringing soccer to Dalton. He enjoyed the community theater. He was generous and could be counted on to support worthy causes and those in need.
Stefan’s passion and purpose in life was serving others. One of his greatest joys was knowing that all his children worked in fields where they served others. Helping others and giving back to those in need was something that he instilled in his children and grandchildren. His legacy is his family and the many lives he touched.
Stefan is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean (Burgy) of Dalton and his five children, Terrie Jones (Kent) of Palm Harbor, FL.; Steve Fromm (Corinna) of Ellijay; Rick Fromm (Samantha) of Dalton; Mike Fromm (Kim) of Dalton; and Sandi Calloway of Dalton.
