Thelma Estes Hall, 82, most well-known as Mama, Mamaw, and Big Mamaw, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 after a battle with ALS.
Thelma was the daughter of the late John B. and Mary Porter Estes. She was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky but made her home for more than 60 years in Dalton, GA. Here she met and married her true love, Wayne Hall, Sr. when she was 16. They were married for 66 years
Thelma was most proud of her five children, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. After raising her own children, she took an integral role in raising her grandchildren. Her children had a difficult time getting the grandchildren to come home from Mamaw’s house. Her motherly role extended to numerous others, as she loved her work with elementary children while working for many years for Whitfield County Schools.
Thelma was an excellent cook, and everyone loved to go to Mamaw’s to eat. Her table was always open to anyone and they were welcome to stay as long as they wanted as long as they didn’t interrupt the Braves, Bulldogs, or Falcons games.
Thelma loved the Lord and had a beautiful singing voice that she used to praise Him. She and her husband spent many years traveling to churches across the south singing gospel music.
Thelma was preceded in death by her daughter, Tessa Hackney; brothers, John Estes, Jr., Charlie Estes, Joe Estes, Paul Estes, and Frank Estes; sister, Virginia Estes Combs.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Hall, Sr.; daughter, Debbie Quinn (Lamar) of Tunnel Hill; son, Wayne Hall, Jr. of Dalton; daughter, Ramona Pangle (Sandy) of Cohutta; daughter, Cristinia Williams (Matthew) of Varnell; sister, Dorothy Jackson (Richard) of Dalton.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday at Church of God of the Union Assembly with Rev. Charlie Pratt, Rev. Lonnie Starnes, and Rev. Fred Cassell officiating.
Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 until 8 at Love Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to The ALS Association, P. O. Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037-0022 or www.alsa.org.
