William (Bill) Benjamin Weaver was born in Middletown, Ohio, June 21, 1935, the son of the late Maurice Franklin Weaver and Thelma Louise Daugherty and brother of the late Fletchie Lee Walker. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Richards Weaver, nieces, Robin Faircloth (Michael), Cherie Walker, and nephew, W. Dean Walker (Bobbie), great-niece, Michelle Glenn (Scott) and their daughter Madelyn and his wife ’ s nieces, Teresa Jacobs (Paul) and Rhonda Lother (William), and great-nephew, John Alexander Jacobs (Katherine), Diane Dent, Mary Rogers (Paul), Alan Daniels (Meg), Larry Daniels and their children and grandchildren.
Bill retired in 2001 as Deputy Superintendent of the Dalton Public School System. During his 38 years with the system, he served as Interim Superintendent, Assistant to the Superintendent, Director of Personnel, teacher, and guidance counselor.
Bill directed the Dalton Adult Education Program reinstatement, and for many years, he served as the Chief G.E.D. Examiner for the area. Hundreds have become high school graduates because of this program.
Bill held leadership positions and was active in numerous professional associations. He served on many committees at the state and national level throughout his career and was a founding member of the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional organization for educators.
Bill began his career in education as a teacher at The Webb School, Bell Buckle, Tennessee.
He held degrees from Ohio University, Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Georgia, and did additional graduate study at Peabody College and Vanderbilt University.
Bill loved Dalton and was very active in numerous civic activities, including City of Dalton Public Safety Commission, Past-Chairman; Dalton-Whitfield-Murray Retired Educators Association, Past President; Georgia Retired Educators Association, District XVI Director; O.N. Jonas Arts Foundation, Treasurer, Board of Directors; Georgia Sheriffs ’ Youth Homes, Cherokee Estate Board of Trustees; Dalton-Whitfield Community Foundation, Board of Directors; Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia, Board of Directors; Dalton Rotary Club, Past President, 1998-99 Dalton Rotarian of the Year. Past civic involvement includes Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Board of Directors, (Founding Director); Cheerhaven School, a school for special needs children and adults, Past President of Board of Directors; Dalton Little Theatre, Board of Directors; Elbert J. Shaw, Jr. Regional Youth Detention Center, Citizens Advisory Committee, Division of Nursing, Dalton College, Advisory Committee; Junior Achievement, Board of Directors; Leadership Dalton, 1990 graduate; Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership, Workplace Committee; Looper Speech and Hearing Clinic, Former Board of Directors Chairman; Northwest Georgia Mental Health Center, Advisory Committee; United Way of Northwest Georgia, Board of Directors; Voluntary Action Committee, President; Whitfield County Cancer Society, Board of Directors; Whitfield County Heart Association Board of Directors, 1995 Volunteer of the Year and 1987 Heart of the Year; Whitfield County Mental Health Association, Past President; Target Tomorrow Committee, Dalton/Whitfield Chamber of Commerce; Highland-Rivers Community Services Board, Past Chairman.
Bill was actively involved at St. Mark ’ s Episcopal Church, where he had served on the vestry as Senior Warden and as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.
Bill and Virginia enjoyed traveling by land and sea and spending summers in Glendale Springs, N.C. after retirement. They enjoyed entertaining and celebrating with their many friends and family. Bill was an avid reader, lifelong learner, and enjoyed staying abreast of current events.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Dalton/Whitfield/Murray Retired Educators Association. (DWMREA) Scholarship Fund, C/O Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia, P.O. Box 942 Dalton, GA 30722-0942, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery St., Dalton, GA 30720, or a favorite charity.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery St., Dalton. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
