William E. Smith passed away on January 4, 2021. He was born on October 22, 1932, in Laurinburg, N.C. to Woodrow and Sadie Smith. He attended Duke University, majoring in History. He loved the Blue Devils and became an avid University of Georgia fan after moving to Dalton. Bill was known to many as Ludlow Smith because his first job in Dalton was as a yarn and jute salesman for a company named Ludlow. Bill was a smart dresser and a great dancer having won a dance contest at the Fountain Blue Hotel in Miami. Some people say that he was the best salesman they had ever met. His success was partly due to his charisma, southern charm, and a myriad of jokes.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Bernice Couch Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Gallman Carreker (Stephen), his son, Michael Gallman (Valerie); nine grandchildren: Stephen Edwards, Devin Edwards, Ashley Williams, Austin Gallman, Walker Gallman, Laura Ann Kilgore, Justin Hicks, Laureen Weeks, and Sidney Hicks; four great-grandchildren: Skye, Jude, and Lucy Edwards and Odie Williams; and, many caring friends, too numerous to list.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Bill Smith at a date to be determined due to the Coronavirus CDC and State Guidelines.
